Northeast Boaters Almanac 2002 (Northeast Boaters Almanac, 2002)
Published in Paperback by Northeast Boating Almanac (May, 2002)
Average review score:

A really good boaters guide
I used this book every time I went cruising this year. It covers from Cape May to Maine and has all the information I needed. Every possible facility for boaters is listed and that was particularly helpful - especially in NJ which most cruising guides ignore.Every facility is located on a chart too! They even list town ramps for dingy docking! One of the things I like too is the binding - the pages stay on the book - not like other guides I've used that come apart. The tide and current information is extensive - much more than other guides give you. I buy this book every year because they update it annually. They even have a website for new information.

Northeastern Wilds : Journeys of Discovery in the Northern Forest
Published in Paperback by Appalachian Mountain Club Books (September, 2003)
Author: Stephen Gorman
Average review score:

Beautiful journey through New England forests
The Northern Forest is an area of twenty-six million acres that stretches from Adirondack Park in New York through Vermont, New Hampshire, and most of Maine. "Northern Wilds: Journeys of Discovery in the Northern Forest" consists of historical information about this area as well as the author's personal experiences. The author provides detailed descriptions and commentary of the various facets of the Forest. These descriptions include what one might expect while hiking in the area in different seasons, canoeing the rivers, or camping as well as how the area is changing due to development, logging, and other ecological factors.

Filled with stunningly beautiful photographs, it made me want to visit the Northern Forest at my first opportunity. A recommended read, but worth the price just for the pleasure of enjoying the photography.

The Ordeal of the Longhouse: The Peoples of the Iroquois League in the Era of European Colonization
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (October, 1992)
Author: Daniel K. Richter
Average review score:

The Masterpiece
Daniel Richter, in this astonishing book, does an excellent job explaining social, political and economical aspects of the Iroquois people with strong evidence. This book is a resutl of a big reserach and Richter's dedication to the subject. I would recommend this book not only to students who need to take Native American History, but also to anyone who is interested in learning about the Iroquoi's life and their impacts on the French, the England, and the Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries. Even though i am not a native speaker, i really enjoyed reading this book because of Richter's plain English.

I had no Idea...
This is a guide for the adventure minded New Yorker, and I don't mean bar hopping. A great summary of 20 adventure sports with a listinf of web and street addresses to help you get started or find more in depth info on the sport of your choice.

A great gift for a "new" New Yorker from a more outdoorsy area or a born and bred city dweller looking for a new adventure.

Nature at its bet
We are new kayakers, in our fifties, and have our own kayaks. We read this book cover to cover before setting out on our first expedition. The book not only details each trip with clear maps, but also tells you when to launch according to the tides, what to look for in weather reports, parking and prices, and clear maps. Since we are new, this information made us feel prepared and safe. The authors' natural history and beautifully illustrated birds and marine life helped us identify what we were seeing. Our first trip to Barnstable Harbor was a delight! We knew when and where to put in and how long a trip it would be. We tasted Sea Pickle, walked on the dunes and were prepared to watch out for motor boats. We identified egrets and saw a great blue heron. This is a great guide, not only for paddling, but as a nature guide as well. We keep it in our waterproof bag with the binoculars they recommend having on board. It also has a wonderful resource appendix for shopping or getting more information. This book is worth the low cost investment.

The Path to a Modern South: Northeast Texas between Reconstruction and the Great Depression
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (15 April, 2001)
Author: Walter L. Buenger
Average review score:

The Path to a Modern South: Northeast Texas between Reconstr
It's our hope this book will find a wide audience among those who enjoy readable history. The period and region has never been covered so thoroughly and in such enjoyable detail.

The book was ten years in the making and if there was anything uninteresting in the manuscript - it's not there now. Buenger examines the ties between Southern romanticism and Texas nationalism and how one bolstered the other. Myths are exposed through a quiet presentation of facts and anecdotes.

The symbolism, psychology (and funding) of the various Confederate monuments in the region - the most costly and elaborate in Texas are explained. If anything, the book create a curiousity to visit the (relatively) forgotten region of Northeast Texas.

The tables are clear and the maps are superb in their Spartan clarity. It's a valuable reference and it's also a book we can see being taken on vacation.
